Jon Hendricks: Happy Auld Acquaintance
By Mike Joyce
Jon Hendricks brought the hats and the Lionel Hampton Orchestra supplied the horns for the Kennedy Center's annual New Year's Eve jazz bash at the Terrace Theater....Under the direction of saxophonist Cleave Guyton, the Hampton orchestra held up its end of the bargain throughout the concert with plenty of finesse and swing-time propulsion.

At 89, Hampton Swings On
By BEN RATLIFF
Lionel Hampton's early set at the Blue Note on Monday night, part of the Panasonic Village Jazz Festival, was characterized by tight, swinging arrangements from a 16-piece band....And it was a powerful group of musicians, with Cleave Guyton casting nimble solos on alto saxophone...

International Jazz Festival Bern, CH. by Ulrich Roth : Article in German
Translating by Christian Fabian, the bassplayer.

Lionel Hampton's small Big Band from the USA received a lot of attention playing the music of the late master. The fore last week of the  twelve week long Festival was dedicated to the Legend and his music. Before were scheduled music from Bix Beiderbecke, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. The Band consisted of: Two trumpets, One Trombone, Three Saxophones and Rhythmsection. Most of the Band members played with the master when he was still alive. All these musicians and their energy's joined together produced an excellent unified sound and great dynamics like hardly ever existing before in history. Responsible for this all  was Cleave Guyton, a young Alto Saxophone and Flute Player, who rehearsed the music with his colleagues and was leading the Band. His action without compromise reminded me of a passionate Wynton Marsalis, his high spirit of Louis Jordan or even a Lionel Hampton. Red Bull might giveyou wings but Cleave Guyton gives you the Kerosine to fly home - " Flying Home "

All That Jazz
Lionel Hampton, all 91 years of him, sat on stage for half an hour before his Thursday night concert at a crowded Trayes Hall in the Douglass College Center on the Douglass campus....The pride in his band was well justified. Though Hampton is the ostensible leader of the group, alto saxophonist and flautist Cleave Guyton guided the band through the arrangements. Guyton's conducting was solid, and his dazzling solos were soulful and technically demanding, he even quoted John Coltrane's "So What" solo that played moments before the concert began.
